Bacton Panels – Fire & Blast Resistant Wall

The Challenge

The Bacton gas terminal is located on the Norfolk coast in the UK and receives gas from the South North Sea and distributes it to the UK and continental Europe. Interconnector own and operate the gas pipeline connecting their terminals in Bacton and Zeebrugge Belgium. The pipeline has a capacity of >20 billion cubic meters of gas per year. Interconnector had a requirement to install a fire and blast protection wall in part of their terminal.

Our Solution

PE Composites proposal used the Jetstop™ J120 system which is able to provide protection for between 15 and 120 minutes in a jet fire up to 1300°C.  This system has been developed to meet industry standards for a rigid passive fire protection system and can withstand hydrocarbon, jet fire and blast overpressure conditions. Panels were manufactured in a suitable size to fit the lay-out and we designed and supplied a ‘clamping system’ for fixing the panels to the structural steel supports to minimise costly site installation time.

Shipment and installation on site was straightforward and ensured no hot work was required on site, an essential feature.

The Outcome

Four hundred square meters of wall were constructed using Jetstop™. This light weight solution, which only required the panels to be clamped in place, made shipment and installation on site straightforward and ensured no hot work was required on site, an essential feature.
