Exhaust valve

The photograph above shows an 8" gate valve complete with flat face seals. The sealing faces are clad with stellite and then machined and lapped together to ensure watertight integrity when in the shut position.

The valve can be operated either manually, by the use of a ratchet and lever through the bottom opening of the cover casting (the lower casting in the photograph) or power operated via the travel cylinder arrangement (to the right side of the valve).

Used when the submarine is on the surface or snorting at periscope depth. The function of the valve assembly is to collect the diesel exhaust gases and discharge them to the atmosphere via the diesel exhaust mast. When not in use the valves, which are tested and qualified to the full operating profile of the host platform, are shut ensuring a pressure tight seal.
