PE Composites manufactures RIBs for the RNLI

Tuesday 18th January 2011

RNLIPE Composites has manufactured the latest generation of inshore Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs) for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) since 2006, and will be delivering 11 hull and deck component sets during 2011. RNLI has unique operational requirements that demand specific performance characteristics of strength, durability and weight that were not being met by existing composite RIB solutions.

By using a glass reinforced sandwich construction process, a 25% weight saving has been achieved. This not only enables considerable operational cost savings, but also higher performance inshore response craft that are better able to respond to the needs of sailors in danger.

The Isle of Wight-based company’s Managing Director, Stephen Smith, says that innovations in process engineering by PE Composites leading specialists have led to the materials performance enhancements: “The lean manufacturing process we have developed results in a high performance laminate with low void content and high quality repeatable assembly over the operational life of the boats.”
